Our DC motor and traction motor rewinding, maintenance and repair services cover the armature and field windings of direct current motors, the commutator and brush system, and verification of the motor under load. At our workshop in Dilovası OSB we service DC motors running in iron and steel plants, rail systems and other heavy industry applications.

Our services in this category

  • DC motor rewinding: renewal of armature, main pole, interpole and compensating windings, commutator work and VPI varnishing.
  • DC motor maintenance: commutator skimming and undercutting, brush and brush holder checks, winding cleaning, bearings and balancing.
  • Traction motors: rewinding, maintenance and repair of DC traction motors used in rail vehicles.

Why do DC motors need specialist expertise?

In DC motors, current is transferred to the rotating armature through the brushes and the commutator. This sliding contact requires the commutator surface, the mica between the segments and the brush holders to be in correct condition. Even slight ovality of the commutator or high mica increases sparking and can eventually lead to armature failure.

For this reason our workshop has equipment dedicated to DC motors: a commutator undercutting machine, universal lathes, a 5,000–10,000 V Kyoritsu DC insulation tester, a Baker-SKF surge tester and a DC motor load test platform.

Signs of DC motor faults

DC motor and traction motor faults rarely appear suddenly; they usually develop with warning signs. Taking the motor in for maintenance when you notice these signs can prevent a more serious armature failure:

  • Increased brush sparking and rapid brush wear
  • Burn marks, scratches or uneven discolouration on the commutator surface
  • Unstable speed and torque behaviour
  • A drop in insulation resistance, increasing vibration and temperature

For motors with sound windings, maintenance covering commutator, brush and cleaning work is often sufficient; where a winding fault is found, rewinding is required. This decision is made on the basis of measurements taken during the incoming inspection.

A process that starts with measurement and ends with testing

  1. Photographed incoming inspection, winding and bar-to-bar measurements
  2. A quotation based on the findings; additional work is done only with your approval
  3. Rewinding or maintenance work, commutator and brush holder work
  4. Armature balancing to ISO 1940/1
  5. Insulation, hi-pot and surge tests; trial run under load and delivery with a report

Because we can manufacture commutators, slip rings and brush holders in our workshop, motors for which original parts can no longer be found can also be returned to service.
